Confused: Alarm.com vs Criticom vs LiveWatch vs SafeMart
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:55:16 PM »
It seems like the alarm industry is a shell game.  There are so many players in the picture, I can't figure out who's who and what role they play.  Can someone help me figure out what each of these companies (Alarm.com vs Criticom vs LiveWatch vs SafeMart) actually do?

It seems like most DIY solutions rely on alarm.com in some way, but from what I can tell they aren't the actually monitoring company, so what do they actually do?  Then there's GeoAlarm, NextAlarm, AlarmNet (which I think is somehow connected to Honeywell), AlarmRelay.  As I'm doing research and trying to compare options, I get confused as to which companies I should be comparing.

Alarm.com, AlarmNet and Criticom will not deal with you direct. SafeMart, NextAlarm, AlarmRelay and GeoArm all specialize in catering for the DIY community and they will handle everything on your behalf  ;)

They are all reputable companies, so there's no need for concern there. Never heard of LiveWatch.

Alarm.com is not a central monitoring company.  They handle all of your interactive stuff.  The way the alarms are handled go something like this with the interactive service.  Alarm goes off at your home or business, communicator contacts alarm.com and then alarm.com sends out notifications to you via text and email.  If you have a central monitoring company then alarm.com sends them the signal information and they connect emergency services and whoever is on your call list.  The thing with alarm.com is that they won't deal with the end user so you will have to go through an alarm.com dealer to get an account setup.  Criticom and alarmrelay are monitoring companys and deal with alarm.com.  Safemart is an alarm.com dealer and livewatch is what they call their monitoring service.  Some of the alarm.com dealers will sign you up for the alarm.com interactive stuff without central monitoring.

The question is what are you wanting to do?

Monitor a system via a phone line?
Monitor a system via an internet connection?
Monitor a system via a cellular data connection?

Thanks desmorider

Reseller: SafeMart (LiveWatch is just a brand name)
Interactive Service Provider: alarm.com
Monitoring Company: Criticom

Where do the other names fit in?  I'm intrigued by everything alarm.com provides, are they best in that category?

In other research, it sounds like alarm.com mandates which hardware they'll support.  So, if I buy from SafeMart am I locked into alarm.com with my only choice being which reseller?

From what I can tell, I have no control over who the monitoring company is?  For instance, Safe and FrontPoint both use alarm.com, but SafeMart uses Criticom and FrontPoint uses RapidResponse (I think).

I am a technician at Alarm Relay. We are a Central Station-to-Consumer low-cost alarm monitoring provider. We support many services, manufacturers and partners in the security industry. We are a dealer of Alarm.com. Alarm.com can be very confusing so I can understand your perplexity, as I was once questioning who or what Alarm.com's involvement was on the alarm verification process.

Alarm.com is a very solid "expansion alarm service" company. As you know, they provide all of the "Bell's & Whistles" for your security infrastructure. They are a great partner to work with, and provide excellent end-user services (i.e. Mobile Apps, Z-Wave Control, & GSM Network for Communication). They mainly achieve this by providing the Cellular communication for your alarm panel.

Alarm.com does not control who monitors you. Unlike ADT, the alarm panels that Alarm.com is compatible with is not proprietary to Alarm.com. Alarm.com (ex GE Security Brass) mainly works with a plethora of GE products, and mainly the 2GIG Go! Control.

Here at Alarm Relay, we work with and support Alarm.com's services. We are the company that monitors  your home or business. One unique fact about Alarm Relay is that we are the same company that activates your Alarm.com account, walks you through the set-up of the monitoring and Alarm.com service. We also are the same outfit (and building! LOL) that monitor and notify you on alarm signals.

I hope my information has helped, we would love to earn your business @winterminute. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Alarm Monitoring only $8.95/month.
